Barmah
The township of Barmah sits on the banks of the Murray River just downstream of the narrowest part known as the “choke”. In this area the dramatically beautiful River Red Gum towers over the natural flood plain that has been recognised under the Ramsar Convention as a Wetland International significance. Hundreds of Thousands of years ago the direction of the Murray River was altered in this area with the geological upheaval known as the Cadel tilt block. The fault line is quite obvious along the road heading west from Barmah to the Cobb Hwy .
The Barmah Forest has a fascinating history that can be explored at the interpretive centre that is within the park area itself.
