SBS Food Journey

Posted on Mar 9, 2011 by merran in General

Six producers from the Sun Country on the Murray Food-Wine-Produce group headed to Melbourne at the beginning of March for the SBS Food Journey. This was a new event created in conjunction with the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival, and was held on March 4-6 2011.

The producers involved were Sue from Daisy Cow Soaps, Anna from Monichino Wines, Mariea and Trinity from Aintree Almonds & Apiary, Bev from Tranquil Hills, Ros and Damien from Rich Glen Olives and Don and Ada from Boosey Creek Cheese. Sun Country on the Murray was there handing out Farm Gate Trail brochures, Visitor Guides and generally enticing everyone to visit our beautiful region.

As we chose to design our own stand we had a car full of hessian, fruit and vegetables, gum leaves, banners and olive branches. Our empty space was soon transformed with wine barrels, wheelbarrows, hessian, milk churns and fruit and vegetables. As you can see, the end product looked fantastic, and was so different... River Access Update

River & Camping Access

Update 11th January 2010

ATTN: Parks VIC and Parks NSW have advised that the following Parks are now open. However, some internal roads and beaches remain closed. Please take note of the signage; it is there for your own safety. When choosing a camp site or parking a vehicle, please be mindful of the fast amount of trees falling as the ground is very soft due to flooding. Mosquito repellent is highly recommend as the mosquitoes are more than friendly this year. For current information please contact the Visitor Information Centres in Yarrawonga-Mulwala and Cobram-Barooga. Please take care.

December River Levels

Posted on Dec 17, 2010 by merran in General

The river levels throughout Sun Country on the Murray may be high, but the area looks amazing. The region is lush and green, and it really is a spectactular sight. Especially for those of us who have only ever seen the region in drought. Have a look at some of the photos that were taken in the past week.

Somebody left the tap on

Broken Creek - Nathalia

Unfortunately all the Murray River access roads are currently closed due to the high water levels. An updated list of these road access and beach closures are at bit.ly/fA3ag7. The current list is also below. We will be updating this as soon as we become... Read the rest of this post

Boats, Bikes & Festivities

Posted on Nov 26, 2010 by merran in YarrawongaGeneral

It's all happening in Yarrawonga this weekend.

Today kicks off with the 2010 UIM Grand Prix Hydroplane Championships. They've been going strongly all day. We had a bit of a hiccup this morning with the weather - but it is now a beautiful and still evening. The boats are still going and they've got their poll positions for their heats over the weekend.

The UIM Grand Prix World Championship is for the fastest powerboats in the world. These boats are absolutely amazing, and if you haven't already seen them - it's definitely worthwhile coming down to check them out. The Hydroplanes have to be launched into the lake by cranes. Each run will only last five minutes, yet these craft can reach speeds of up to 370kph and burn about 100 litres of fuel. They really are incredible (so is the noise they make).

This weekend is not just about the hydroplanes. There are over 80 boats competing in 11 different classes this weekend. There's the Juniors, 6 litre... Read the rest of this post

Spring is here. So is the Show.

Posted on Oct 1, 2010 by merran in YarrawongaGeneral

The rain's gone, the sun is shining and the weather's warming up. Things look fantastic at the moment, everything's lush and green, there's water in our rivers and it's finally spring. What could be better?

The Murray's open again and the lake is looking fantastic. It's a great time to get out there and get back on the water, whether you're tearing it up on a Jet Ski or speed boat or enjoying the peace and tranquillity while kayaking down the Murray River.

Don't forget to also stop by the Yarrawonga-Mulwala Agricultural Show this weekend. Enjoy twilight horse events, kids' novelty events and races and a battle of the bands on Friday night. Don't miss the Spectacular fireworks display to top it all off. Saturday is when the action begins, with BMX demonstrations, the wood chop display and competition, Miss Showgirl competitions and the Grand Parade. Make sure you take the time to browse through all the exhibits, including the horticultural pavilion, cookery and... Read the rest of this post

Water Update 10.09.2010

Posted on Sep 10, 2010 by merran in General

It's been fantastic to see all this rain over the past week. Everything's green and the rivers are full. However we urge everyone to take care. We've been advised by the SES that the Murray River is closed to all river activities downstream of Tocumwal Road Bridge to Barham Bridge. This closure includes all forms of boating and swimming.

However the weather is warming up and we're in for a relatively fine weekend. There's still plenty to do throughout Sun Country on the Murray. Our golf courses are open and haven't been this green for years. There's plenty of shopping and live entertainment around the area. If you haven't already, checkout our Farm Gate Trail to indulge in some of our great local food and wine. There's also plenty of walks and nature to enjoy, and the current water levels are a definite must see. So for a great weekend come and experience Sun Country on the Murray.

Markets on The Murray

Posted on Mar 26, 2010 by merran in General

I just had a look at the calendar of events and see that this weekend there are two great markets on for those visiting the region.  On Saturday there is the Cobram market where you can buy all sorts of fare from plants to clothes and local food and wine.  Mick Grillo from KNM Berries is a regular at this market and he has the most divine plums and strawberries so pick some up if he is there.

The Yarrawonga Farmers Market is on Sunday and you will find many of the shops open in Yarrawonga to support the market too.

This weekend should be great one for a kayak or canoe on the Murray or through the Barmah Forest.  We had a group of journalists up this week and they had a lovely time kayaking in the everglade region of Lake Mulwala.

Autumn is here

Posted on Mar 23, 2010 by merran in General

From: The Tourism Manager:

I went for a run along the shores of Lake Mulwala today.  It is mid week but there are still people about enjoying the most delightful Autumn days.  The cruise boats were out on the Lake and the yummy BBQ smells made it hard for me to push on with my run.  March really is a wonderful time of year on the Murray River.

Easter is fast approaching and planning for the River beaches Festival in Cobram is in full swing.  This is now a regular event on the annual calendar and takes place on Thompsons Beach on Easter Sunday from lunchtime onwards.  The little yellow ducks will jump off the old bridge and race their way down the River at 3pm.  Bring the family for a great afternoon out with all manner of entertainment including dragon boats on the Murray.
