Great news - all the river beaches are now open (at least between Cobram and Yarrawonga). If you're after specific road closures or want to know about any other areas, go to http://on.fb.me/fA3ag7. There's a list of what is open and closed from Wodonga to Barmah.
All the beaches are open, the sun is shining and the River Beaches Festival has kicked off. It's going to be an action packed 5 days. There's heaps to do around the area and enough events and activities to entertain everyone in the family.
The River Beaches Festival kicked off last night with the Death by Chocolate Dinner at the Barooga Sports Club. After seven courses of chocolaty goodness, many of the staff (myself included) were feeling very full and sorry for ourselves. That did not stop us from taking home the chocolate bunnies on the table of course. The chef did an amazing job and I was amazed at how well lamb and chocolate sauce went together. I can honestly say many of us felt 'Death by Chocolate' was a fitting name. The Cobram Central Hotel had live music & karaoke for the Royal Children's Hospital, and the Royal Vic Hotel/Bottom Pub had music under the palms. A great start to what is going to be an eventful week.
Today sees many enjoying the fish lovers feast, seafood banquet and lobster seafood lunches & dinner scattered around the Big Strawberry, The Cobram Hotel/Top Pub and the Bottom Pub. From 7pm tonight is the Chain Reaction John Farnham Tribute at the Barooga Sports Club. And we can't forget the GRAND OPENING of Kensal Estate Wines. Make sure to drop in, there's tastings all weekend!
For the sporting minded, there is the 113th Annual Easter Tournament being held in Yarrawonga from the 22nd - 25th, the Anzac & Easter Yachting Regatta and the Black Bull's 'Hole in One' Competition (also running to the 25th). Don't forget also the annual Sporties Cobram Barooga Golf Tournament.
Easter Saturday and Corowa is holding the Australian Billy Cart Championships. That will definitely be something to see, with participants coming from all over to race their homemade or professional carts. For all the shopaholics out there - Cobram has a massive 5 hour SALE from 9am - 2pm (I'll see you there). Stop by the Cobram Lions Market on your way, and then finish off with the Cobram Live Music Party, featuring Pink & U2 Tribute Bands.
Easter Sunday is the River Beaches Duck Race & Family Fun Day down on Thompson's Beach. Packed full of entertainment there is a Sand Sculpture competition, Roy Maloy circus act, kids rides, Brody the Dog Frisbee Champion and an EGGnormous Easter Egg Hunt. And of course the famous Rubber Duck Race kicks off at 3pm. Make sure you're there to see one of my winning ducks crossing the finish line. There's still plenty of time to get a duck - drop into the Cobram Barooga Visitor Information Centre, or you can pick one up on the day. To top it all off the Bottom Pub has live entertainment from 6-9pm.
Make sure to also catch the Yarrawonga Rotary Market and the Farmers Market on Sunday. If you're looking for some action - head over to Tocumwal for their first Pro Rodeo.
Monday there are plenty of Anzac Day Services throughout the Shire. Monday also sees the end of the Easter Tennis Tournament and the Hole in One Competition, but finish up with the Murray River Music Food & Wine Carnival. Enjoy live music whilst tasting the gourmet food and wine from the region. Take a chair or picnic rug and enjoy the music, food and atmosphere under the river gums. Make sure you also visit Cactus Country for their 'Sculptures in the Gardens', and enjoy the all the food each town has to offer.
That's all from me for now, I'm off to go try a fit everything in!
